Assessment

Assessment

Gain the insights you need to best support your child’s unique development and profile.

Are you looking for more insights into your child’s development, learning and behaviour? For many children, development and learning does not flow in an even or predictable pattern and can leave parents and teachers unsure how to best assist or make sense of what is going on. We often hear from parents who are feeling worried, frustrated or perplexed by why their child may excel and seem perfectly capable in one area, yet struggle in another. Or perhaps it’s just not clear why a certain pattern of behaviour is occurring despite all your efforts and input from teachers.

We all have a unique pattern of strengths and vulnerabilities. Psychological assessment can provide insight and opportunity to target supports to help your child reach their full potential. Depending on the purpose of the assessment the following areas may be examined:

  • Cognitive strengths and difficulties (intelligence)
  • Academic skills and learning
  • Executive functioning (i.e. memory, attention, organisation)
  • Adaptive and functional skills
  • Behaviours of concern

A diagnostic assessment is conducted when there is a specific concern or question about a child’s behaviour or development that warrants further exploration. There are many reasons a diagnostic assessment can be helpful, including allowing shared understanding of presenting concerns and how to best support your child. In some instances, a diagnosis also allows for access to specialised treatment and funding options.

Our psychologists can assist in the assessment of developmental and learning disorders (or giftedness), including:

  • Developmental Delay
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Intellectual Disability
  • Learning Disorders
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

All assessments utilise empirically validated tools and procedures and are conducted in conjunction with parents, teachers and key professionals to ensure a comprehensive picture of your child is reached.

We understand the process of getting an assessment can be confusing and confronting. This is why we take the time to ensure you are informed every step of the way and go through results and recommendations with you fully.
